The United States became a member of the Human Rights Council in 2009 and served two three-year terms ending in December 2015. According to Council rules, it must spend one year off the Council. The Obama administration has announced the United States will seek reelection during 2016.

Ambassador Harper will address how U.S. participation in the Human Rights Council has affected universal human rights protection while advancing American interests and challenging UN Member States’ disproportionate focus on Israel.

The event is co-sponsored by AJC’s Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights and the United Nations Foundation.
