At the beginning of this year, the U.S. owed the UN $2.8 billion in unpaid dues — more than 25% of the UN’s annual budget and ten times the amount owed by any other nation. This debt shortchanges peacekeeping missions, compromises UN efforts to promote global peace and security, and damages our reputation in the world.
Today we face threats no one nation can afford to tackle alone — from failed states, to humanitarian crises, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and deadly pandemics. Working through the UN prevents the U.S. from paying all the bills and taking all the risks for global security and stability. Deploying a UN peacekeeping force is eight times cheaper, and far safer, than sending American troops. And honoring our commitments to the UN today will help enhance America’s reputation and rebuild bridges needed to keep us safe tomorrow.
GET INVOLVED!
Our leaders need to know you support honoring our commitments to the UN and paying off the debt that is risking our security. Here are two ways you can take action:
Tell Congress: Don't Go It Alone The Administration's budget would dramatically underfund the UN next year. Write to your Members of Congress to let them know that supporting global peace and security by investing in the UN pales in comparison to the price of going it alone.
Tell the Next President: Make the UN a Priority On Day One On November 4th, 2008, Americans will elect a new President. Tell the candidates to improve our standing in the world On Day One by honoring our commitments to the UN.
