Take Their Word for It

The UN is a hugely valuable institution because it's where the United States demonstrates the broad international support for our policies: two rounds of unanimous Security Council sanctions on North Korea, opposition to Iran's ballistic missile programs. Americans often take for granted the importance of giving less powerful states a place to agree or oppose us. Building agreement at the UN legitimates American power in the eyes of other states, and that makes less costly everything we do in the world.
