2021 Budget Request Jeopardizes America’s Global Leadership

Share

Washington, D.C. (Feb. 10, 2020) – Better World Campaign President Peter Yeo issued the following statement today on the administration’s Fiscal Year 2021 budget request:

“The Administration’s budget request – The Budget for America’s Future – does not make our country stronger or safer, as it intends. Rather, drastic cuts in international affairs spending reduce our ability to fight pandemics and contain the spread of terrorism, while further reducing America’s leadership role across the world.

“As the coronavirus has proven, global cooperation is essential to America’s wellbeing. Funding UN Peacekeeping forces is far more efficient and cost-effective than sending American troops overseas. UN peacekeepers play an increasingly vital role in these turbulent times, yet this budget would add to a staggering amount – approaching a billion dollars – that the U.S. currently owes the UN.

“While many have expressed concern about the increasing role of China on the world stage, this budget further erodes American leadership, creating the very conditions the administration has cautioned against.

“We urge Congress to reject the Administration’s budget and maintain U.S. leadership in international affairs.”
