The U.S. Election to the United Nations Human Rights Council

Washington, D.C. (May 12, 2009) — “The election of the United States to the Human Rights Council is an extremely positive development. For the first time since 2006, the United States will have greater leverage to ensure that the Human Rights Council is an active promoter and protector of human rights for all. The UN Foundation looks forward to working with the Administration and the broad coalition of organizations and individuals who want to see the Human Rights Council live up to its full potential. The work of the Council will not change overnight, but with the election of the United States, the efforts to improve the Council can now begin in earnest.”
