The UN system is comprised of the UN, whose headquarters is in New York, and more than 30 affiliated organizations—known as programs, funds, and specialized agencies—with their own membership, leadership, and budget processes.

These groups work with and through the UN to promote worldwide peace and prosperity; elevate the status of women and girls; assist refugees fleeing war, famine and persecution and much more. UN funds and specialized agencies also work in certain areas that might you not expect: supporting civil aviation; improving global communications; and coordinating the exchange of weather information.
