On Nov. 8, the United Nation’s Fifth Committee – responsible for the UN’s administrative and budgetary matters – submitted nominations to the General Assembly for new members to its Committee on Contributions. Among those chosen to serve was Jordie Hannum, Executive Director of the Better World Campaign.
Hannum brings to the position 20 years of legislative and advocacy experience, including key positions on Capitol Hill, in political campaigns and within non-governmental organizations. Reflecting on this new role, Hannum remarked, “I’ve been privileged to witness the UN’s lifesaving work up close and worldwide. I’ve seen how contributions – from the U.S., other nations and NGOs – allow for burden-sharing and ultimately save lives and improve livelihoods. It’s an honor to serve the UN in this way.”
The Committee on Contributions advises the UN on distribution of expenses among Member States. The group meets annually to recommend changes to how countries pay into the two main budgets of the UN: the Regular Budget and the Peacekeeping Budget. Payments are based on a formula intended to represent a country’s “capacity to pay,” with adjustments made for factors like their debt and population. The Committee also advises the General Assembly on fixed assessments for new Members and appeals by Members for a change of assessments.
At BWC, Hannum guides U.S.-UN engagement efforts. He has traveled extensively to UN field sites, including in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Lebanon, Jordan, Nepal and Indonesia. His writing has appeared in Foreign Policy, The Hill, Just Security, The Cipher Brief, and Devex.
Like all 18 delegates of the Committee on Contributions, Hannum will serve a three-year term that begins on Jan. 1, 2025.
