Peacebuilding and International Engagement

New Hampshire is famously home to the Bretton Woods Conference of 1944, which laid the groundwork for the United Nations and the international financial system. That legacy lives on today in the state’s support for multilateralism and its role as a convener of foreign policy dialogue.

Dartmouth College’s Dickey Center for International Understanding conducts research on global security and humanitarian challenges, collaborating with UN-affiliated partners.

Refugee Resettlement

New Hampshire has resettled over 7,500 refugees since 2002 through UNHCR-affiliated programs, primarily in Manchester, Concord and Laconia. Communities from Bhutan, Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq have revitalized local economies and contributed to workforce needs in healthcare, manufacturing and education. Organizations like the International Institute of New England support housing, employment and language services — often in partnership with federal and UN-linked efforts.

Public Health and Research

New Hampshire’s medical institutions, including Dartmouth Health and University of New Hampshire (UNH), participate in health research on vaccine development, rural health equity and aging aligned with the World Health Organization. During COVID-19, the state implemented WHO-informed protocols for infection control, vaccine storage and rural outreach.

Education and Youth Engagement

New Hampshire schools actively engage in Model UN, particularly through Phillips Exeter Academy, St. Paul’s School and public high schools in Keene and Hanover. Dartmouth’s Model UN program and global studies curriculum emphasize diplomacy and sustainable development. New Hampshire students have high participation rates in Peace Corps, Fulbright and UNA-USA chapters and the state’s educators integrate UN observances into curricula — encouraging civic engagement and global citizenship.
