Washington, D.C. (Dec. 3, 2020) — Peter Yeo, President of the Better World Campaign, congratulates Representative Gregory Meeks, the new Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC).
“Rep. Meeks is the right leader for this moment,” Yeo said. “As a senior member of the Committee, he has traveled extensively around the globe and frequently met with senior leaders at UN Headquarters. He understands the value of coalition building, and the critical role the United Nations plays in furthering the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States.”
In addition to oversight of the United Nations, HFAC’s jurisdiction includes UN peacekeeping, foreign assistance, the State Department, international law enforcement issues like narcotics control, and global health issues like family planning and HIV/AIDS.
“Rep. Meeks has been an ally in the global fight against malaria,” Yeo added. “He knows that global health issues — whether malaria, polio, or COVID-19 — require global cooperation and strong support of our multilateral commitments. He supports paying the UN the dues our country owes.
“As a Representative for New York’s 5th District, the UN is located in his proverbial backyard,” Yeo said. “On a recent trip, he visited the Arc of the Return, a UN memorial that honors the victims of slavery.”
“On a personal note, I had the pleasure of working with Rep. Meeks and his team directly, during my time as HFAC Deputy Staff Director. I know him to be a capable and caring legislator. We look forward to working with the new Chairman and members of the Committee, as they address the many transnational challenges ahead.”
