Washington, D.C. (Aug. 4, 2015) – New research conducted by the Better World Campaign has found that U.S. contracts with the United Nations totaled $555.5 million for corporations and organizations throughout the United States last year. The businesses provide a range of goods and services, including telecommunications, financial services, construction, food production, and production of armored vehicles.
The UN contracts were executed in 30 states and more than 100 cities and communities. The vast majority of the businesses are U.S.-owned, accounting for $513.5 million of the total sum awarded to companies operating in the United States.
“The U.S. invests in the United Nations to achieve its foreign policy goals, but the return on investment goes beyond advancing global peace and security — we also see it tangibly here at home,” said Peter Yeo, president of the Better World Campaign. “Of course, many of 2014’s contracts originated in New York and New Jersey, near the UN’s headquarters, but substantial and important transactions are also happening across the country in places like Ohio, Texas, Wisconsin, and California.”
The analysis stems from the UN’s publically accessible records of contracts executed in 2014, and compiled by the Better World Campaign, a private nonprofit which works to strengthen the relationship between the United States and the United Nations.
