Washington, D.C. (March 16, 2016) — U.S. businesses generated more than $1 billion in contracts with the United Nations in 2014 and 2015, according to new research conducted by the Better World Campaign. The businesses provide a range of goods and services, including telecommunications, financial services, construction, food production, and production of armored vehicles.
“The contracts, which have been executed in 30 states and some 120 cities and communities, demonstrate the UN’s value to the U.S. as not just a key foreign policy tool, but also a good business partner,” said Peter Yeo, president of the Better World Campaign.
“The U.S. invests in the United Nations to advance our goals for global peace and security, but the return on investment goes beyond that — we also see it tangibly here at home. While it’s likely no surprise that many of these contracts are housed in New York and New Jersey, near the UN’s headquarters, substantial and important transactions are also happening from coast to coast, in places like Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, and California.”
In 2015, 212 U.S. companies conducted lucrative business with the UN, totaling nearly $450 million in value. In 2014, the value of contracts totaled $555.5 million, benefiting 215 companies.
