Majorities believe it is important for the U.S. to maintain an “active role” and to pay dues “on time and in full.”

Washington, D.C. — When it comes to the U.S. engagement with the UN, an overwhelming majority of U.S. voters believe it is important for the U.S. to maintain an active role in the organization.

In a poll of nearly 2,300 registered voters conducted by Morning Consult for the Better World Campaign in August 2024, 75% believe it’s important for the U.S. to maintain an active role, including 65% of Republicans and 88% of Democrats.

“This overall number has remained remarkably consistent over the years,” said Peter Yeo, President of the Better World Campaign. “It suggests that Americans of all backgrounds and political dispositions understand the value the UN provides to our country, practically and strategically.”

In fact, nearly two-thirds of voters polled say the UN is supportive of America’s goals and objectives around the world.

Among other findings:

  • 55% believe the U.S. should continue to pay UN dues to the regular budget
  • 60% believe the U.S. should continue to pay UN peacekeeping dues
  • 63% believe it is better for the U.S. to work with allies and through international organizations to achieve foreign policy goals.

The poll was conducted between August 12-17, 2024, among a sample of 2,291 registered voters. Interviews were conducted online and the data were weighted to approximate a target sample of registered voters based on gender by age, educational attainment, race, marital status, home ownership, race by educational attainment, 2020 presidential vote and region. Results from the full survey are available here and have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
